Historic Seamen's Bethel & Mariner's Home

Founded in 1830, the New Bedford Port Society maintains the historic Seamen’s Bethel and Mariner’s Home located on the top of Johnny Cake Hill in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Serving the maritime community for over 175 years, the Seamens’ Bethel is also the site of dozens of weddings, christenings and memorial services each year.

The chapel can also be rented for readings, performances, and photo shoots. Join us for the annual Moby-Dick Marathon, hosted each January in conjunction with the New Bedford Whaling Musuem.

Wednesday, February 28, 12pm: Memorial Service for Arthur Moniz

We will be celebrating the life and memory of Arthur Moniz today at the Seamen’s Bethel, beginning at 12pm. “He was a brilliant artist and a humble man. His paintings depict a wide range of interests, from New Bedford’s Rich Maritime History, both fishing and whaling.”  Read the full obituary or Standard Times article.
